SAJE (Strategic Actions for a Just Economy) is hiring a Program Specialist! The program specialist will support efforts to educate low-income community members  about their rights and options in regard to habitability and affordability of housing.

The Program Specialist will be part of a curriculum team for a 12 month grant to build collective advocacy of area residents on housing.

ABOUT SAJE: Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE) is a 501 c3 organization located in South Central Los Angeles. We are a membership-based organization, and for over 25 years we have worked side-by-side with our neighbors to improve our community by advocating for tenant rightshealthy housing, and equitable development. We train people to organize and advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities. We believe the fate of city neighborhoods should be decided by those who dwell there and collaborate with community organizations and public officials to ensure this occurs in a manner that is fair, replicable, and sustainable. Our staff includes community organizers, outreach specialists, canvassers, researchers, and communication specialists, organized in cross-functional teams.


  • Support efforts, especially government funded ones, to educate low-income residents about their rights and options in regard to housing affordability, urban planning and land use, climate mitigation, code enforcement, eviction protection, and generally the quiet enjoyment of their home and their right to the city.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of tenant rights and policies related to SAJE projects and campaigns, and keeping that knowledge base current.
  • Staff or act as “reserve staff” for the REAP program. They must: 1) educate tenants regarding their rights and encouraging them to pay their reduced rent into REAP; 2) conduct site visits to properties to monitor the status of the units and determine whether the required repairs were made by landlords to bring the properties up to code and into compliance; 3) enter data via City of LA online data system; preparing reports on work performed; and maintaining and updating files; 4) provide mediation between landlords and tenants, when needed; 5) meet and interacting with landlords in a productive way.
  • Conduct campaign outreach and recruitment through activities such as door-knocking, surveying, follow up phone conversations, and house visits with potential leaders.
  • Drive extensively to workshops or properties in all neighborhoods of the city, and canvassing tenants door-to-door.
  • Staff SAJE’s Tenant Action Clinic and educational workshops as needed.
  • Provide follow-up support to tenants who attended clinics or workshops and ensure that they are referred to legal or other services as appropriate.
  • Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work well in teams.
  • Assist with quarterly grant report writing.
  • Manage calendar, set goals, and create a weekly work plan.
  • Have commitment to social, economic, and racial justice.
  • Support SAJE’s mission, vision, and policy stances.
  • Provide interpretation and translation from other languages, dialects, or language registers if your knowledge and skills enable you to do so.
  • Participate in other SAJE activities, as needed.  These duties include participating in all SAJE all-staff activities and could also include attending meetings and hearings, canvassing, fundraising, and other assorted tasks.
  • Perform other duties, as the organization’s needs determine.


  • Ability to gain the trust of, motivate, and spark an interest among local residents.
  • Good presentation and speaking skills and the capacity to explain complex information and issues in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • Ability to use popular education techniques.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Valid auto insurance that meets SAJE’s required limits.
  • Successful experience working with low income communities in urban settings doing community organizing, community outreach, community education, or similar activities.
  • Experience with housing and children, health and children, housing justice issues/campaigns, tenant work is ideal.

Must Be

  • Warm and positive with community members.
  • Flexible in time and mind: there will be weekly evening commitments and work required during the weekend.
  • Organized and detail oriented; excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work, strong capacity for independent and collaborative problem solving.
  • Vaccinated as recommended by medical professionals.

  • Perform a variety of duties even with distractions or interruptions, and adjust priorities quickly
  • Be vaccinated against diseases as recommended by medical professionals.


This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position. The pay rate is $22.12 – $25.90 per hour depending on experience.  SAJE offers medical, dental, and vision insurance to employees and their direct dependents (e.g. children). We also have a retirement plan, paid holidays, sick pay, and generous vacation leave.  This is a grant-funded position through June 2023.
