The Change You Created

2011 was a year of growth and change in the Figueroa Corridor. The Metro Rail's new Exposition Line -- Phase 1, between Downtown and Culver City, is almost ready to start -- promising huge changes, even upheavals, not just in transit but in housing, business, jobs, and much more.

USC has been forging ahead with their master plan, and we’ve been there the whole way, fighting for the right to healthy and affordable housing, for accountable development, and for a South LA that works for everyone. Thank you for being part of the SAJE community.

Whether you stood with us as we fought for justice for the Menlo 4, if you met us for the first time by donating to a bowler at our annual bowlathon, or if you joined us any of the events and actions in between, you created a foundation for change that we can all be proud of.

Read on to see a few of the great things we accomplished together in 2011. I’m excited about the change we’ll create in 2012, and I’m thrilled that you’ll be a part of it.

Become a Monthly Sustainer

You generously pitched in last spring when we were raising money to support our leading role in the UNIDAD Coalition's USC campaign, as residents and South LA stakeholders fight to stop displacement around USC.

You also helped to make our 2011 Bowlathon a huge success. We all know that while we might be emerging from the great recession, times are still tough. SAJE continues to fight for the rights of families to live in healthy and affordable housing, we’re working to make sure that new developments benefit everyone, and we’re holding the line against displacement.

Join us as a monthly sustainer, at any level you can.

2011 - Securing Community Benefits In South LA

Last February, the UNIDAD (United Neighbors In Defense Against Displacement) coalition secured a victory for South LA when we successfully negotiated a community benefits agreement with GH Palmer & Associates, developer of the Lorenzo project, a mixed-use development at 23rd and Flower in South LA.

As part of the agreement, Palmer has agreed to provide funding for affordable housing creation in South LA, small business retail space, a local small business revolving loan fund, job training resources and local hiring, transit oriented development support and a health clinic that will serve 20,000 low-income and uninsured South Los Angeles residents every year.

At completion, the agreement will result in a total investment of around $10 million in community benefits.

2011 – The People’s Plan

In October, SAJE revived its groundbreaking People's Planning School, a series of highly participatory, bilingual, popular-education lessons in the basic tools, concepts, and politics of urban planning, through an economic-justice lens.

More than forty members of SAJE's local community (plus guests from Boyle Heights, brought by our good friends at ELACC) gathered at SAJE for four Tuesday evenings in a row to learn about the basics of urban planning, as well as: the connection between urban planning and health (including parks, exercise, and access to healthy, affordable food); the history of planning, development, and displacement in South LA; the history of USC's past expansion and development in the Figueroa Corridor; and more. We culminated our People's Planning School with attendees and their friends and family attending USC's Master Plan Open House to voice their concerns with USC's planned expansion. We’ll be holding at least two more sessions of People’s Planning School in 2012. Stay tuned for details.

2011 – LA Rising

Back in July, we took part in the LA Rising festival’s ‘Re-Education Camp.’ We educated hundreds of attendees about UNIDAD’s campaign to fight displacement in South LA.

2011 – Standing with the Menlo 4

In late 2011, we brought you the story of Willie, Captoria, Donald, and Clifford, otherwise known as the Menlo 4. The Menlo 4 campaign signaled the public launch of our Right to Housing campaign. This campaign seeks to combat slum housing by advocating for systems change within the City of Los Angeles' code enforcement system.

They’ve been living in slum conditions and fighting for justice to keep the relocation benefits awarded them by the LA Housing Department – benefits that their landlord is suing to deny.

Their story is one of dignity and the basic human right to housing – and it’s ongoing. We’ll bring you updates as they occur.
