The People's Plan for the Figueroa Corridor

For far too long now, communities that wanted a say in how changes were made in their own backyards had to fight on a development-by-development or building-by-building basis, often just to secure piecemeal community benefits.

For long term and low-income residents in our gentrifying or soon-to-be gentrifying neighborhoods in the Figueroa Corridor, this is certainly been the case. However, all the while we are asking for small changes, more and more longtime residents are being displaced.

< p>Right now, LA’s Planning Department and USC are drafting their individual plans for what they think the Figueroa Corridor and surrounding neighborhoods (South Central & Southeast LA) should look like for years to come.

SAJE believes that local and long term residents and other community stakeholders need to craft their own community visions, because it's our community too.

That’s why SAJE and the Figueroa Corridor Coalition for Economic Justice launched a People’s Planning School.

peoples planWe're working with the Figueroa Corridor residents and stakeholders to understand city planning, create community plans from the ground up, and to take central roles in the protection and revitalization of their neighborhoods.

With development spreading ever further and faster in Los Angeles the time has come for a broad-based, deeply rooted coalition to take our vision for our community straight to City Hall, and make sure our voices are heard.

Are you a Figueroa Corridor stakeholder and want to get involved? An interested ally who'd like to volunteer? Or simply want more information about what we're doing and why we're doing it? Contact  David Robinson at SAJE.
